Even though they’re all Republicans, Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dade Phelan are locked in a battle after the Legislature failed to pass a property tax cut during the regular session that ended May 29.

Though the Texas House and Senate have been at odds over how to deliver up to $17.6 billion in property tax relief, both chambers have answered the governor’s call to advance some level of school district tax rate compression.
