Darren Owen receives top TTARA professional honor

Darren Owen, property tax manager for ExxonMobil Corp. in Houston, was awarded the Del Threadgill Distinguished Tax Professional Award by the Texas Taxpayers and Research Association (TTARA) at its 2023 Annual Meeting.

Presented annually since 2011, the Threadgill Award is TTARA’s top honor and recognizes the achievements of an individual who has made a significant contribution to advancing fair state and local tax policy, has demonstrated a high standard of professionalism, and is recognized by his or her peers as a leader in the profession. The award honors the late Delmer Ray Threadgill, former chairman of TTARA and vice president and director of tax services at J.C. Penney Company.

“Darren Owen represents the best of the tax profession, from overseeing property tax issues for one of the world’s largest companies to being active in his industry’s trade associations,” said TTARA President Jennifer Rabb. “TTARA is especially grateful to Darren for contributing his valuable time and knowledge to further our tax policy initiatives as chair of TTARA’s Property Tax Group.”

Owen has worked in property tax for Exxon Mobil Corp. since 2000. He joined the company after working as a property tax representative for Marathon Oil Co. for 10 years.

Owen is chair of TTARA’s Property Tax Group. He also chairs the TXOGA Ad Valorem Tax – Legislative Subcommittee and was a member of the TXOGA Mineral Subcommittee for more than 10 years. He is a member of the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association (LMOGA). Owen received his CMI professional designation from the Institute of Professionals in Taxation in November 1996.

He graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Henderson State University in Arkansas. He has been married for 25 years to his wife, Tricia, and they have three children attending Texas A&M University.
